Located on the Great North Road, Doncaster (12M) is now renowned for horse-racing, but the stagecoach trade built its Georgian wealth. Later, horses gave way to locomotives, and the Flying Scotsman and the Mallard were created here.
Following major reconstruction, Doncaster's town centre will be greatly extended. Its new Interchange, the Frenchgate Shopping Centre, historic market and Lakeside Village designer outlet will provide plenty for the shopper of the future.
Doncaster's St George’s church was recently elevated to become Doncaster Minster. Other landmarks include Brodsworth Hall (17M), one of the country’s most complete Victorian country houses, and the 10th Century Conisbrough Castle (21M). The Museum of South Yorkshire Life is based in the Grade 1 listed 18th century Cusworth Hall (14.5M).
On the leisure front, the Dome leisure centre combines swimming, ice-skating and climbing with live entertainment.
