To the South is the famous cathedral town of Lincoln (35M). Today it combines a wealth of historic architecture on the higher ground, with a modern and bustling town centre on the lower ground, and out-of-town shopping and across the river.
Large numbers of houses were levelled in the 9th Century to make way for the imposing Castle, which is on the site of a Roman fortification. One of the four surviving copies of the Magna Carta can be viewed here.
Rebuilt in the late 13th century, the Cathedral with its three towers is clearly visible for miles around. An imp carved by a stone mason with an unusual sense of humour has become the emblem of the City. Other historic buildings include the Roman Newport Arch, the Medieval Palace of the Bishops of Lincoln, the 12th century Jew’s House and the 15th Century Stonebow and Guildhall.
The famous cobbled Steep Hill (whose name is no overstatement!) descends past a wealth of historic buildings to the new town and the Waterside Shopping Centre.
