The colourful Yorkshire Coast - 2

Robin Hood's Bay (96M) is packed with visitors in holiday season, but nevertheless can be a pleasant place to wander around. Visiting at quieter times of the year gives a greater sense of the fishing village as it once was. But make sure you can cope with the heady descent on foot, and the steep climb back up again afterwards.

For its own claims to fame, Whitby (125M) connects its beach and harbour with its Abbey (which reputedly has links with the Dracula stories) by means of its famous steps and a steep cobbled track which passes above the town’s narrow harbourside alleyways, fish-smoking sheds and sizeable harbour with busy fish market.

The harbourside is often home to the Bark Endeavour, Whitby being, as it was, the main departure point for Captain Cook’s voyages. The nearby pretty fishing village of Staithes with its colourful cottages and steep little paths was where the Captain served his apprenticeship as a grocer before he went to sea.
