Top - The popular village of Grassington. Middle - A regular visitor to Malham Cove. Bottom - View from Middlesmoor to Gouthwaite.
The central dales are the most popular, stretching from the pastoral landscape of Langstrothdale in the North to the tourist villages of Buckden (106M), Kettlewell (90M) and Grassington (84M), passing the distinctive Kilnsey Crag on the way. Equally stunning, though slightly to the West at Malham (89M), is Malham Cove, a vast outcrop of rock accompanied by an intriguing limestone pavement.
Leaving the National Park from Grassington (84M) on the Ripon road brings you to Pateley Bridge (75M), a well-established community despite the steepness of the route on to Harrogate. The town also provides access to the road by Gouthwaite Reservoir and on to Middlesmoor (83M), one of the most remote hamlets in the Dales.
Continuing north east eventually brings you to the small market town of Masham (80M) and from there you can travel east to Bedale (79M) and from there to Leyburn (90M) and Middleham (88M) – beautiful places with the focus definitely on rearing horses and entertaining tourists.
